Delicious breads and pastries, handmade pizza baked in a wood-fired oven, the best books and equipment for baking at home, professional bakers to answer your questions, live music, antique baking tools, beautiful kitchen linens, scythes and other tools, tips from King Arthur Flour experts about the use of their various baking flours, demos, and superb Maine made foods.
The Maine Artisan Bread Fair is likely unique in the country. It is a fair dedicated solely to Real Bread and everything associated with this most ancient and central staple. It has now been around for five years and has grown each year. As it has grown, it has evolved and this past year was the best ever. We had a record crowd and the most vendors ever, with the widest variety of wares we have seen. We also had more demonstrations ranging from scything to actual bread baking. You could mill flour by pedaling a bicycle! We started a children’s area where kids could knead dough themselves and we will build on this in 2014 to add more fun things. There were pizzas cooked on masonry hearths with live wood fires and tacos made from tortillas baked fresh right on site.
If you close your eyes and savor the smells and listen to the music, you can drift back to the 14th century on Lughnasadh–Lammas Day. This is a day of great power and the fair falls on its eve. Celebrate the midpoint in the passage between the summer solstice and the vernal equinox. Revel in the baking and consecration of the first loaves from the summer’s harvest of grain. You will feel a primal security knowing winter will come and there will be bread.
