About the Maine Grain Alliance

The Maine Grain Alliance is a nonprofit organization that began in Skowhegan, Maine in 2007.

Our mission is to preserve and promote grain traditions, from earth to hearth, among farmers, bakers, and families around the table. We provide opportunities to learn and share how best to grow grains and bake breads using local, nutritious, and sustainably-grown ingredients using a combination of traditional and innovative techniques.

Our annual Kneading Conference brings together farmers, bakers, researchers, malters, food entrepreneurs and wood-fired oven enthusiasts to educate one another about the art and science of growing and milling grains and baking artisan breads. Our annual Artisan Bread Fair is a free summer festival offering wood-fired oven demonstrations, artisan bread samplings, and opportunities to talk with professional bakers and explore the best books, tools, and delicious accoutrements to whole grain bread baking. We also offer educational programs for Maine schools and communities that teach basic bread making and include topics such as nutrition, sustainable agriculture, and baking as a career.

What we do…

We organize the annual Kneading Conference and Artisan Bread Fair held each summer in Skowhegan, Maine, and the Kneading Conference West held each fall in Mount Vernon, Washington. With a generous grant from the Quimby Family Foundation, we have purchased a mobile wood-fired oven and organize educational baking workshops for schools and communities in Maine and fundraising events for the Maine Grain Alliance and other organizations.
